Jack quote of the week:

I'm glad we got this baby. Aren't you glad we didn't get the one in the hospital room next to us that cried all the time?

Jack: La-la-la chicka wha-wha-wha...[LOUDER] La-la-la chicka wha-wha-wha!
Jules: You know, sweetie, you don't have to be making noise all. the. time.
Jack: I know. For some reason, I just have a knack for it.

Ooooooooh, great...look who's eight!

Talk about a fun-filled birthday. With week to go until Jack's party, we're well on our way to having too much birthday thanks to a big evening at the Go Kart park on Nana's last night in town. A photo recap of the big birthday weekend:

The promised bit of Tell

We love our Wub-a-Nub!

New this week: smiles!

Jack quote of the week:

To M while playing catch...

Dad, if I practice hard enough do you think I could be a legend?
********************************************
So, life is taking on a shape that looks something more like normal. Plans for Jack's *eighth* birthday celebration are in the works, and Liam is deciding that sleeping at night might be kind of okay. At his one month pediatrician's visit on Monday, he weighed in at 9 lbs, 2 oz and is now 20" long. In other words, everyone around me is getting old and big.

Some more show, the tell is coming soon

It's no longer cursed! A photo of Liam in a poor defenseless sleeper going on it's *6th* hour of wear!! Prior to today, it was known as the "cursed" outfit, having made it no more than 30 minutes without getting something unspeakable on it.

Explicit bathtub photo to tuck away for prom date. Note that bathtime is still running a close second to naptime on our list of favorite things.

It's important to nap often during the day so we can chat about all sorts of important things at 1 am.

It has to be close to nap time again, right?

At home all day with a baby and a camera...

Wook at that whittle fwace!

Tuckered out after his first lunch out with mom and friends. (Someday we'll take pictures of him when he's awake.)

Someone's in a milk coma. Again.

Bathtime...actually not that unpopular. He generally sits back, relaxes, and pees in the water.

So peaceful...

Hello there, bright eyes.

Liam's Birthstory

Friday, August 25th was my last day at work before maternity leave. Last days are always something to look forward to, but as an added bonus it was "Jeans Day" (as if I had any that still fit) *and* my co-workers were throwing me a send-off breakfast. I arrived a little late (Hey, last day and all...) at 8:30, greeted everyone, set my purse down and made my daily first stop to the restroom. My water broke as soon as I finished, though I spent a good three or four minutes second guessing this fact and doing toilet tissue experiments. When it became certain, I loaded up my panties with paper and went to share the news.

When I returned, my boss and four co-workers were in the hall along with 2 HVAC guys and a janitor. I never pictured myself saying, "My water just broke" to such a crowd, but I was rather stuck. I left in a trail of squeals, even some from the HVAC guys.

I hadn't started contracting yet at all (Obviously, or I might have saved myself some gas). Getting into the car, I remember being giddy and nervous and oddly thrilled that I would finally get to sit on the puppy pads I'd been carrying around for weeks. I should say at this point that M's single biggest fear in the last weeks of my pregnancy was my 45 minute + commute, so I waited until I was ten minutes from home to phone him. As soon as he picked up, I said, "Stay calm. I'm ten minutes from home, my water broke when I got to work." His phone at work is one of those that's less of a phone and more of a PA system, so apparently several of his co-workers heard every word and started gathering around. He said, "I'm calm. Water broke. Leaving now." His cave man impression gave me the giggles, but I managed to say, "Stay calm" another time or two. He told me later that as he was leaving, everyone patted him on the back one by one and said, "Stay calm".

When I got home, I threw a few last minute items in my hospital bag and got the car packed and ready while I waited for M. Still no contractions--I felt nice and soggy but otherwise great. I went to give keys and phone numbers to our neighbors and started to wonder where M was. When he finally pulled up, he got out and said, "I got caught in traffic. I am so not calm." A few more things in the car and some deep breaths, and we were off by 10:30.

We checked in to the hospital and were taken to a triage room. I was checked for progress, and of course with no contractions my situation hadn't changed from the 3 cm I was at on the 22nd. We were moved to a labor and delivery room and I had the first of many great nurses who helped us finish our cord blood donation paperwork and laugh at some of the questions. I wasn't happy about being chained to the bed with tubes and monitors, but it was very cool to spend some relaxing moments with M and this cool lady. My doctor was willing to give me two hours before starting a Pitocin drip, and those two hours came and went pretty quickly. At that point, I realized I'd already had to let go of a number of the things I'd hoped for about labor--walking around, being at home for as long as possible--and it became obvious that my fear Pitocin was just another one of those things.

Cool Nurse eased my mind by starting the drip as low as she could, but she kept having to dial it up every few minutes and finally...finally at 2 o'clock things started working. They started working a little too well and I got an overwhelming feeling of wanting "labor" to continue the way it had been--crunching on ice chips with M and laughing while he called me Rush Limbaugh with my big bag of "Oxycotin". I asked for an epidural and we watched the clock. And watched. We continued to joke and marveled at the massive contractions I was barely feeling. At around 7, I began shaking pretty violently. I knew it could be a side effect of the epidural, but Cool Nurse pointed out that the sort of shakes I was having could also be indicative of transition. Sure enough, my progress was checked by the next (cool) nurse on staff and it was time to rock and roll. My doctor lived just a few minutes from the hospital, so we did two rounds of pushing to gauge when to call. I was feeling very little urge to bear down (a big concern of mine with the epidural) and it took me a bit to get into a groove. On the second set, things started to come back to me and my doctor was called. He arrived a short time later and I was still only intermittently feeling enough pressure to bear down naturally. M was at my side cheering me on, completely void of the squeamishness he thought he'd have. Not only was he "in there" taking in everything he could, he was grunting and pushing along with me in a fairly comical way. The first time he did it I nearly lost my concentration and started laughing, but then it became rather endearing (though we're both very happy that he didn't poop on the floor). I finally felt some good pressure and pushed a second time for my doctor, and Liam made his great debut. One more good push and he was on my chest...I think I stopped sobbing just long enough to take a peek and say hello.

M spent the next few minutes fluttering around the room like a caffeinated hummingbird. I kept hearing things like "Oh wow, he's got my earlobe dimples!" and "He's got ten of everything!" Every once and awhile he'd come over to me to emphatically tell me what a good job I'd done. He was so not calm, but of course it didn't matter anymore.

Rest assured that Liam is absolutely worth the heartburn, the stretch marks, the keg thighs, and the forty weeks. It's safe to say I am permanently smitten.

"Hi I'mnotinlabor"

I used to just say "hello" when making a phone call, but apparently this is the preferred greeting these days.

In the spirit of assigning mature characteristics and powers of reason to a person still in the womb, we've come up with some theories about when this might actually happen.

  • BabyW is stubborn, really stubborn. I've nooooooo ideeeeeeeeeea where he'd get this.
  • M is consistently 10 minutes early for everything and J is consistently ten minutes late. Would that make him right on time?
  • Lucy has scared him into fear and submission by barking every time M starts talking to my belly. BabyW is currently clinging to the walls of my uterus in terror.
  • BabyW has heard about the dog and baby chick hats I've knitted for him. He's thinking he needs a few more days with his dignity.

Dear BabyW,

I promise it's warm and cozy and really exciting out here. We'll do snuggling and food and all kinds of kisses if you'll just join us out here where the action is.

You're ready, I'm ready. Let's jam.

Love,

Mama

Who's on first with a pregnant lady?

Jack: Guess what? Haley's having her birthday party at [Raucous bouncing kids' party locale] too!
Jules: Really? That will be two parties there in just a short amount of time. When is her birthday again?
Jack: Birth Day.
Jules: Yes. When is her birthday?
Jack: It's on Birthday Day.
Jules: No, I know that. But when is it?
Jack: [Thinks for a moment...] I mean Labor Day!

Proof that George Lucas will license anything. I don't care, it still makes me smile.

Every new big brother needs that one special gift that's uniquely him. Jack is getting this. It's called Darth Tater.

Second Grade: Not For the Subdued

Jack and Lucy on the big first day

It's six am. Up since five, I'm in the middle of a coughing fit trying to knit my way through another sleepless morning. A door opens, and Jack bursts (Note: the word burst was not chosen for dramatic or comedic effect. The child literally burst.) from his room.

"Coughing!?" he shouts. "Is that what you do for fun when you wake up early, mom!?" Mind you, this is a boy who typically needs someone to stand at the foot of his bed with a bullhorn to pry him from his sleep. Yet this morning, he's awake, and he's on. It must be second grade.

6:02 am Mom, when can we start getting ready?
We've got plenty of time, honey.

6:43 am Mom, is it time to start getting ready yet?
Jack, school doesn't start until 9 o'clock. We've got some time.

7:07 am I should probably start getting ready.
Oh, I think you can relax for a little while.

7:34 am Oh my gosh. It's already 7:34! I'm going to be late if we don't hurry!
Your school is three blocks away, sweetie. We've got some time.

8:06 am Mom...
Jack, why don't you go make your bed and start getting dressed?

* * * *
It's 7 pm. The dinner plates are snuggled into the dishwasher, the dog has taken her rightful place on the couch, and Jack? His knees are tucked up under his tummy, his bottom sticks out with a babyish cuteness. For a moment, he looks like my little boy again, his blonde hair jutting this way and that on the sofa pillow where he sleeps. He's much too old to let me know the day has worn him out, and he's still too young to fight it. It must be second grade.

Morning, and all its glory.

4:30-5 am: Cough uncontrollably between sips of water. Adjust pillows.

5-5:20 am: Dwell on the insane notion that we're having a baby. Soon. What in the hell were we thinking? What have we done? Who thought this was a good idea? There is a beautiful child sleeping in the next room who a.) sleeps b.) pours his own cereal *and* puts away the milk, and c.) wipes his own bottom. I'm starting all over because....? Adjust pillows.

5:20-5:30 am: Think to self, What in the hell am I going to try to wear today? Adjust pillows.

5:30-6:24 am: Adjust pillows. Enter into a sleepish sort of state filled with bizarre dreams I can no longer remember.

37 wks, 4 days...

Lists, my favorite don't-think-about-labor past-time...

Things That Have Already Annoyed Me Today, Even Though It's Friday and I Should Be Happy:
1. The fire alarm "test" that sounded from 8:15-11:23 am. Um, guys? I think it works.
2. There is a bottle of ?? in the refrigerator at work that may start talking soon.
3. A horde of crickets moved into the first floor ladies bathroom last week. It's the day of the locusts until I get in the stall and sit down, then they all shut up like they want to listen to me pee. Are crickets supposed to have some weird bathroom fetish?
4. My desk calendar keeps telling me it's only August 11th.
5. Why does Jack's school insist on beginning and ending vacations and semesters in the middle of the week? Here we are again, flipping through our two options...take the days off or find two days worth of child care at some exorbitant rate. Two working parent households. I get it. We're the minority.
6. Trader Joe's Chocolate Sunflower seeds are the dreamiest, but they are really hard to eat. I have so many seeds sprinkled beneath my desk, I wouldn't be at all surprised to return to a garden when my leave is up. Of course, my leave has to start first. It's only August 11th. Sigh.

Randomlist:
1. Traffic was eerily light this morning. I've been trying to take a news break (Hey, there's just not much good stuff going on in the world right now) but I turned on NPR thinking that I'd missed a giant zombie attack or something. Turns out traffic was light. Oh, and I was really late.
2. We've learned that Jack has a second teacher named Lindsay in this, his third year of school. Naming trends are so gosh darn fascinating to me. So many of the world's other Julies were born within ten years of me, and it appears as though many of the baby girls of the Lindsay boom are out of school and getting their first teaching jobs. Wonder what the hot names for 23 year old teacher types will be when the new one goes to school? The Ashleys? The Madisons? The omnipresent Emilys?
3. Lucy is on to us. She was doing so well with her freedom...stretching her legs out of the crate and having free run of the kitchen. It was working so well. She was calm in the evenings, grateful to us for the trust. Ah, yeah. She knows. She knows we're getting a new puppy and she's doing her best to make it known that she does not sanction the change. Tuesday it was a box of juice packets intended for Jack's lunches. Try pink lemonade sprayed all over the kitchen (those suckers get some distance when punctured). Yesterday it was my iron. Gee, I really wish she could find a way to tell us how she was feeling...
4. Hmmm, I've very clearly got a butt just below my ribs. Should I give it a little pat-pat-pat?

Recommitting

It's time to get blogging again.

37 weeks, 1 day. Okay, so there's the biggest reason it's time to get blogging again...it's become difficult to focus on anything but an end to The Gestation. Two hundred and sixty days down. Twenty days to go. Four hundred eighty hours, give or take. Yeah, it's time to meet this kid already.

Things to think and laugh about other than the thing blocking the view of my shoes:

1. My funny, funny Jack. His highlights for the week:
  • After spending the better part of Saturday bowing to the gods of retail & getting him ready in every way for the miracle of second grade, we were both spent. He described our marathon as "X-treme" shopping. Take that, X Games.
  • Camp can be a rough, and it was for Jack yesterday. He suffered a major knee scrape during some horseplay, and was (naturally) milking it for what it for what little it was worth when he got home. The milking seemed to intensify at bedtime (shocking!) and after his bath he came hobbling over to M and I, naked as can be, and asked, "Hey? Do you guys have any alcohol?" Of course he was referring to more of the rubbing alcohol treatment he got from his camp counselors, but I had to pause for a moment and make sure I wasn't back in the dorms.

2. Knitting my way to China. Okay, so most of my projects have been for the Shoe Blocking Person Not to Be Named in This List, but I'm turning out new stuff daily like a one woman sweat shop. Next on the list: Finally making a blanket from the three great colors of Blossom I picked up a year ago. Soft, cool, and oh so yummy. It should be done just in time to get spit up on.

3. Good books. I'm enjoying Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil right now, although the vivid descriptions of crazy Southerners are giving me completely whacked out dreams. It's nice to have some significant time between seeing the film and reading the book--I've had no problems with the typical movie errors/oversights/omissions, and John Cusack and Kevin Spacey have managed to stay the hell out of my book.

4. Fall is coming! I know I couldn't be more ridiculous for already wishing it fall. It's August 8th, after all. Maybe I'll just blame it on all that retail craziness over the weekend. Yes, the stores have pulled out the pumpkins.

5. Birthday cake. Thirty one years of being part of the magic. Wow how time flies.

Nothing like getting a blog and neglecting it completely...

If this blog were a fish, it would be floating.
